One ties his camel to a desk while the others smoke their pipes in front of a belly dancer.
The advertisement was part of a series designed for a computer game, Risk, where players use their armies to vie for global supremacy.
Designed by the Saatchi & Saatchi agency in Singapore, the advertisement won the silver medal in the print division of the Asia Pacific Advertising Festival (Adfest), held in Thailand in March.
It's one of many pieces now on display at Bentara Budaya art showroom, in Palmerah, Central Jakarta, as part of an attempt to promote Adfest in Indonesia.
It is quite an ambitious exhibition for a number of reasons. First, it is rare that people would actually want to go out of their way for the privilege of viewing ads as works of art.
That irony would surely not be lost on the advertisers themselves, who spend much time and money devising ways to reach their target audience.
Second, Indonesia has traditionally struggled to compete with countries such as Japan and Malaysia at the annual Adfest competition.
No advertiser from this country has ever won a medal at Adfest, and on only one occasion has an Indonesia advertiser even been announced as a finalist.
There may be many reasons for this. According to Indonesian Association of Advertising Agencies (PPPI) chairman Narga Shakri Habib there is a difference between creative advertisements and an effective ad campaign.
"They say, a good creative ad is not necessarily good advertising," Narga said. "Some people make ads specifically to win awards, and then there's the ads that have an impact on people."
"We're looking to have ads in Indonesia that are able to appeal to people, and also are able to compete in the awards."
A simple look at some prominent billboards in Jakarta will show that effective marketing in Indonesia does not necessarily need to be creative in an arty sense.
Some local advertisements are totally direct with their message, such as the one authorized by the National Narcotics Body (BNN), which leaves little doubt as to the effects of drugs on young people.
The billboard shows twin shots of a young man, one dressed in a suit smiling, the other lying dead in a coffin. The banner underneath reads, "This high or that `high'?"
"In advertising, we're talking about communication, and every country has different segmentation, and their cultures are different," Nargo said. "Each country has a different way (of advertising), because we're trying to reach different segments and target audiences."
"Indonesian people are, of course, different to Thai people and Japanese."
But there are some signs that Indonesian advertisers are becoming more creative.
In this year's Young Lotus Awards, a section of Adfest for the "rising stars" of the industry, two junior Jakartan advertisers were selected as finalists: Capriana Natalia from David Marketing and Nico Owen from Lowe Worldwide Indonesia.
It's an important feat because, despite the obvious cultural differences that exist at a contest such as Adfest, the most successful advertisements have an appeal that transcends language and cultural barriers.
There were many advertisements in the campaign for Risk other than the spoof on an Arab White House. They include Indian troops marching through Tiananmen Square and an African Queen inspecting the British Royal Guard.
For Narga Shakri Habib, good humor and creativity are elements of advertising that are universal throughout the world, and are necessary to ensure that a product is able to reach a global market.
"If you look at all these ads, they have something in common -- they are all simple, [with] almost no wording," he said. "Basically, the idea is to keep it simple, with a single message."
"A good ad should be universal. For instance, no matter what region you are from, you look at this ad [for Risk] and you can understand it, no matter what language you speak."
With that in mind, Nargo said he has some ambitious goals for Indonesian advertisers.
"There are no Indonesian ads in this room yet," he said.
"Hopefully, next year we'll have something of our own to show off."
(The work of selected finalists in the Adfest competition is on display 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily through July 23 at Bentara Budaya art showroom, Jl. Palmerah Selatan 17, Palmerah, Central Jakarta.)

Jakarta TVC Commercial Young Lotus

Jakarta TVC Commercial Young Lotus

<embed style="width:400px; While most delegates were preparing to travel to AdFest, twenty-eight young creatives from fourteen different countries were stretching their minds to complete the 60 second commercial brief given to them, entitled, ‘You can do good things in Pattaya’. The Young Lotus Workshop took place from 12 -14th March and was moderated by BBDO Asia, who invited an international group of speakers from BBDO offices in Europe and Asia. The entire project has been filmed reality-style and the edited results will be presented to delegates at AdFest on Saturday, 17th March.

Jimmy Lam, President of the AdFest Working Committee says, “The Young Lotus Workshop starts a fire in the belly of participants that keeps smouldering, until long after AdFest closes. Contestants are exposed to a wealth of experience and talent, learn the thrill of close competition and build relationships across the region that they will remember for the rest of their careers.”

Young Lotus participants were pre-selected by the local advertising association in each country and have already outshone their competitive compatriots. Winning Young Lotus will define their achievement on a regional level. Participants for this year’s workshop include teams from Bangkok, Beijing, Colombo, Dhaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo.

The first day at AdFest 2007 concluded with two speaker sessions in the afternoon.

David McCaughan from McCann-Erickson Tokyo presented insights into what really motivates consumers from the McCann PULSE research study. His first insight was the title of his presentation, “Don’t Call Them Consumers”.

Japan Association of TV Commercial Production Companies (JAC) presented five short films produced by young directors from around Asia. She explained, “Although there was a high number of entries for the category, the overall standard of work was lower than usual, which is reflected in the number of gold awards given out”.

In addition to the three gold and Best of Outdoor awards, the judging panel selected seven bronze and four silver Lotus Awards from 1,392 outdoor entries. There Winning agencies were from Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Mumbai, Petaling Jaya, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney.

DM

Out of 256 direct marketing entries, eleven awards were presented.

Seven bronze and four silver trophies were awarded but no gold awards or Best of Category were given out. Steve Dunn, Head of Art for JWT London was chairman of the judging panel. Of this year’s awards he said, “The work entered for Print Craft was not of as high a standard as the inaugural year and it was a surprise not to be able to give an award for Best Photography.”

Seven awards were given for work selected as Best of Category.

The award for ‘Best Use of Photography’ was presented to BBDO Singapore for ‘Wrangler’. At the workshop, Tony coached creatives on what makes a good radio commercial, and how to bring that good commercial to greatness.

Says Tony Hertz, managing director and creative director of Hertz;Radio and Other Clever Advertising and the judging chairman for AdFest Radio Lotus Awards, “There is a misconception that as one of the smaller categories, radio awards are the easiest awards to win, but this is not the case. Award-winning radio advertising needs great conceptual ideas and to be produced to the highest international standards.”

Speakers for day two at AP AdFest 2006 focused on finding that great creative idea. Peter Souter from AMV BBDO, London talked about “The Evolution of Guinness”, specifically explaining the route that the agency took to get to its award-winning work for the famous beverage.

He took delegates on a journey of advertising development that featured a selection of commercials from AMV BBDO that “all do a smart thing”. That “thing” was that they all turn the problem upside down to become the solution. His presentation amply illustrated that great ads have a simple, emotional communication running through them, which has the ability to change the way people think about what is being advertised.

Following Peter Souter, the Young Lotus Workshop moderating team from BBDO Asia took to the stage to update AdFest delegates on the latest from the reality of the creative process, which was filmed throughout the two-day event. T he BBDO team included Chris Thomas - Chairman & CEO BBDO Asia Pacific, Peter Souter - Deputy Chairman and CCO, AMV BBDO London, Suthisak Sucharittanonta - Chairman & CCO, BBDO Bangkok, David Guerrero - Chairman & CCO, BBDO Guerrero/Ortega and Simon Bond - Regional Director, Proximity Asia. The results of the Young Lotus Workshop will be revealed on Saturday at the Gala dinner and Awards presentation.

In the after-lunch slot, Mr. Benjamin Palmer giving advice on ‘Learning by doing' and Mr. Lewis Blackwell led a panel discussion with creatives expert in print, reviewing some of the print work entered and guiding delegates to ‘Look, don't read”.

AP AdFest 2007 is the largest yet. 5,012 creative works have been submitted from over five hundred agencies in forty-nine cities around the region - a six per cent increase on the number of entries entered in 2006.

Asia Pacific Advertising Festival

為什麼天空退出影片
Why Sky Exits Films ?????
The Most Awarded Production Companies in the world

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062185238247828914" style="DISPLAY: block; The carnival atmosphere broadcast that the celebrations were about to commence for the largest ever gathering of advertising and production professionals in Asia Pacific.

The event kicked off with concurrent screenings of 895 TV award entries and an exhibition of two-dimensional media works, spanning three floors of the convention hall. This included 1,453 press entries and 1,392 outdoor entries as well as entries for DM, Cyber, 360 and Contagious Lotus for Innovation awards.

AP AdFest 2006 is the largest yet. 5,012 creative works have been submitted from over five hundred agencies in forty-nine cities around the region - a six per cent increase on the number of entries entered in 2006.

The AdFest speaker sessions kicked off in the afternoon with the latest Gunn Report, the global ranking of creative success, presented by Donald Gunn.

In the Gunn Report, Thailand was ranked as the 5 th most awarded country worldwide in 2006 and first in Asia Pacific.

Four Asia Pacific agencies fared well in the Gunn Report’s worldwide rankings. Ogilvy & Mather Bangkok took 20 th position, JEH United Bangkok was placed 19 th equal, Creative Juice/G1 Bangkok was 9 th and Dentsu ( Tokyo & Osaka) was ranked 3 rd equal.

Thailand production company, Phenomena was also ranked the second most awarded production company in the world in 2006, against stiff competition from London production companies, which took first, third and fourth places. Thanonchai Sornsrivichai from Phenomena trounced all the competition to become the most awarded director in the world in 2006.

AdFest Lotus Awards play a contributing part towards worldwide rankings in the Gunn Report and this year’s results are eagerly anticipated.

Judging for the Lotus Awards started on Sunday, March 11 th and fifty-one judges have generously given their time to select the winners for ten award categories, including TV, Press, Outdoor, DM, Cyber, Radio, 360, Contagious Lotus for Innovation, Film Craft and Print Craft.

While the judges were hard at work selecting the Lotus Awards, another group of people were burning the midnight oil. While most delegates were preparing to travel to AdFest, twenty-eight young creatives from fourteen different countries were stretching their minds to complete the 60 second commercial brief given to them, entitled, ‘You can do good things in Pattaya’. The Young Lotus Workshop took place from 12 -14 th March and was moderated by BBDO Asia, who invited an international group of speakers from BBDO offices in Europe and Asia. The entire project has been filmed reality-style and the edited results will be presented to delegates at AdFest on Saturday, 17 th March.

Jimmy Lam, President of the AdFest Working Committee says, “The Young Lotus Workshop starts a fire in the belly of participants that keeps smouldering, until long after AdFest closes.
